Across the Caribbean South, unplanned tourism-driven development is rapidly changing local life.
Founding families are being displaced, and the cultural identity that has defined this region for generations is slowly fading.
At the same time, government investment in education, culture, and public community spaces continues to decline.
This leaves children, youth, and adults without safe environments to learn, gather, and cultivate the knowledge and values that hold the community together.
In Puerto Viejo, there are no free, public spaces dedicated to education, reading, arts, healthy recreation, or cultural connection.
The community has nowhere to study, explore creativity, host intergenerational activities, or simply enjoy a safe and refreshing space.
This lack of cultural and educational infrastructure threatens the continuity of our Afro-Caribbean and multiethnic heritage, weakening the roots that make Puerto Viejo unique.
We propose the creation of a Community Library in the heart of town accessible to all and built for the wellbeing of the people who live here.
The library will offer:
A space by the community, for the community dedicated to growth, culture, and opportunity.
In a place where “everything is for sale,” this library becomes a protected space of learning, connection, and cultural continuity.
Because everyone who knows Puerto Viejo understands how special it is.
Because our community deserves a place where culture is preserved, children can learn freely, and families can gather safely.
Because if we do not act now, we risk watching Puerto Viejo transform into another destination that has lost its identity.
“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” A.L.
This is an investment in education, culture, identity, and long-term community wellbeing.
