About This Project

Introduction to the Metaproblem

Across the world, frontline communities face growing pressures from biodiversity loss and climate change to extractive industries and cultural erosion. Without strong, inclusive governance, regenerative efforts often fail to scale or serve those most deeply connected to the land.

Core Problem in the Bioregion

The Osa Peninsula called “the most biologically intense place on Earth” by National Geographic holds:

  • 2.5% of global biodiversity
  • Over 50% of Costa Rica’s biodiversity
  • The largest lowland rainforest in Pacific Mesoamerica
  • The largest Scarlet Macaw population in Central America
  • A vital nursery for whales, sea turtles, and hammerhead sharks

But Osa is at a crossroads. Once isolated and protected by geography, it now faces:

  • Unsustainable palm oil expansion
  • Poaching, illegal logging, and mining
  • Corruption and lack of public services
  • Land insecurity due to poor conservation regulations
  • Pressure from mega-tourism projects (marinas, resorts, airports)
  • Fragmented efforts from stakeholders working in silos

These are symptoms of deeper systemic challenges. Without coordinated solutions, Osa risks trading its natural wealth for short-term development that benefits few.

##Proposed Solution

CEDPO (Community Empowerment for the Development of the Osa Peninsula) is a systems-based solution co-created by:

Regenerative Earth, the Osa Territorial Council, INDER, and PIOSA (University of Costa Rica).

CEDPO enables a local governance body to select, support, and fund regenerative community projects strengthening local leadership, culture, and ecosystems.

Projects currently supported include:

  • Cultural revitalization with Ngäbe families
  • Organic native vanilla cultivation and enterprise
  • Women-led melipona bee honey production and pollinator restoration
  • Coral reef regeneration in Golfo Dulce
  • Strengthening recycling centers and public education
  • Support for music, dance, and cultural expression
  • Growth of rural eco-tourism businesses

What Makes It Unique

  • Locally led: Projects are chosen by communities with ancestral and ecological knowledge
  • Systemic design: Projects connect economic, social, and ecological health
  • Capacity-building & grants: To ensure implementation success
  • Strategic partnerships: Bridging local and national institutions
  • Scalable model: Designed for replication in other bioregions

Why People Should Donate

Donating to Osa supports regeneration, justice, and peace in communities experiencing the frontlines of climate change.

By funding CEDPO, you are:

  • Protecting endangered rainforests, reefs, and wildlife
  • Uplifting Indigenous knowledge and women's leadership
  • Creating regenerative livelihoods and long-term jobs
  • Supporting education, biodiversity, and climate resilience
  • Laying the foundation for system-wide, community-led change

Call to Action

Help protect one of the most precious ecosystems on Earth and support the people who care for it.

Donate now to support CEDPO and regenerative leadership in the Osa Peninsula.
