Mission:
To protect the coral reefs of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica - from Cahuita to Manzanillo - by engaging in scientific research, environmental education, ecosystem restoration (including beach/sea clean-ups and riverbank/coastal reforestation),
Coral Conservation is a non-profit community organization founded in 2021 by María Cabrera and 9 more locals in Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean.
It began as a small community initiative focused on environmental education and local beach cleanups, aiming to inspire residents and visitors to care for the coastline. What started as a grassroots platform slowly grew into a structured organization, expanding its reach to marine education, scientific research, and coral reef preservation.
Today, Coral Conservation works to protect and preserve the coral reefs of Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean through education, science, and community engagement. Its mission is to raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and empower local communities to take
an active role in ocean conservation.
The organization has developed educational programs for schools and community groups, organized numerous beach and underwater cleanups, and collaborated with national and international partners to monitor reef health and strengthen conservation efforts.
Coral Conservation envisions a healthy and thriving marine ecosystem where people and nature coexist in balance - a Caribbean where coral reefs flourish, communities are empowered, and future generations grow connected to the ocean and inspired to protect it.
