In 2017, during the VIII Pan-Amazonian Social Forum (FOSPA) in Tarapoto, Peru, representatives from organizations and Indigenous communities in Ecuador and Peru, concerned about increasing threats to their territories and declining quality of life in their communities, created the Sacred Amazonian Basins Initiative. Supported by civil society organizations, their goal was to permanently protect the heart of the Amazon, home to 600,000 people from over 30 Indigenous groups.
In 2021, the Alliance launched the Bioregional Plan for the Sacred Basins, a proposal rooted in the life plans of Indigenous communities. This plan, with nine pathways for socio-ecological transition, serves as a work guide reflecting the needs of both the communities and the ecosystem.
In 2023, the organizations formalized the Alliance as an autonomous entity in Ecuador, marking a milestone to strengthen collaboration for the Amazon. This step established the Alliance as a formal, robust space.
In 2024, the Alliance has 28 new member organizations, including 25 Indigenous organizations from Ecuador, Peru, and the region, along with 3 from civil society, reaffirming a radical and enduring collaboration between ancestral and contemporary knowledge.
