Following the Kiteezi landfill collapse, dozens of families were devastated, with 34 lives officially reported lost. Houses were destroyed as heavy machinery accessed the site to evacuate the affected. Despite promises of compensation and resettlement from the government, most victims have received no support. Meanwhile, residents are being urged to evacuate without the funds needed to secure new homes, leaving them stranded and vulnerable.
The collapse caused leachated water from the landfill to flood nearby residences, submerging homes and worsening the disaster. This crisis stems from years of government neglect, as the landfill exceeded its capacity in 2010 but continued to serve Kampala’s metropolitan area. Our project is committed to ensuring justice for these victims and providing the support they need to rebuild their lives.
